Michigan State head coach Tom Izzo has some thoughts on his team’s loss to Cal on Friday night, saying he was a little surprised by how quickly things fell apart after a scoreless first period.
“It was tough.
We started off pretty good and then we got a couple of penalties and we got our ass handed to us,” Izzo said.
I’m not a big fan of scoring in the first period, but we just kind of lost it.””
There were a couple more penalties, a couple turnovers, and we kind of started to lose it.

Michigan State has not won since the third period of a Jan. 23 win over Colorado State.
The Spartans were led by sophomore goalie Taylor Moton, who has started all six games this season.
Moton stopped 26 of 29 shots in a 3-1 win over Minnesota on Thursday night, but has been on the ice for only one goal against Cal on Saturday.
The Wolverines are still in the hunt for a first-place finish in the Big Ten and a berth in the NCAA tournament.
Cal is tied for second in the conference standings.
The game was broadcast live on CBS Sports Network at 10 p.m. and streamed on YouTube.
