The NHL and its players union have not said when the league will begin a ban on all games on Sundays, although there is talk of doing so in 2018.
“The NHL and players union are committed to a robust, inclusive and fair play program that supports the health and safety of our players and fans,” NHL commissioner Gary Bettman said in a statement Thursday.
“We have been working diligently to identify ways to further ensure the health of our fans and players.”
On Wednesday, the NHLPA held its annual meeting in New York City, which saw many of the league’s top stars in attendance, including players, coaches and management.
The union’s annual meeting comes after several recent incidents of player abuse, including the death of a 17-year-old fan who was killed in a fight at a game in March.
The player’s mother, who has been outspoken in her opposition to violence in sports, was arrested on charges of child endangerment and domestic violence.
